HURRICANE - It seemed like another day at the office for the Hurricane tennis team. A few good wind gusts didn't slow the Tigers as they continued their march toward a perfect 3A Region 9 season. Advertisement
Led by freshman singles players Duncan Alger and Ricky Rahde, Hurricane didn't drop a set and rolled to a 5-0 win over Cedar on a windy Tuesday at the Tigers' courts.
Alger posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over the Redmen's Russell Stewart in the No. 1 singles match, but admitted the wind was a problem, especially in the second set.
"It was tough to be consistent out there, but I had to keep the ball in play and hit to (Stewart's) backhand," Alger said.
For a freshman, Tigers coach Marc Manuele is impressed with how Alger has played.
"He's handled the role well. He enjoys it and it works out well for our entire team," Manuele said.
Rahde had an easy time in his match at No. 2 singles, beating Chris Price 6-2, 6-0.
At No. 3 singles, Cody Pickering had some trouble with the wind in the second set, but beat Jacob Berry 6-3, 6-0.
"There was the usual wind out there, but it was blowing from the side, so it left me with one more thing to think about," Pickering said.
In the doubles, Hurricane's No. 1 team of Jaden Seely and Brady Maag beat Carson Chandler and Nathan Coonen, 6-1, 6-3, and at No. 2 doubles, Jake Payne and Kendall Whiting beat E.J. Leavitt and Andrew Coonen, 6-2, 6-2
Up next for Hurricane is the regular-season finale against Desert Hills for the 3A Region 9 team title. The Tigers beat the Thunder 3-2 in their previous meeting, which came down to a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles.
"Being undefeated was our goal from the start, but we know Desert Hills is a tough team," Alger said. "The first match could have gone either way, but I hope we can pull this one off."
"I'm excited for Thursday," Pickering added.
