Tiger Cheerleaders Ready for a Great Year | | The Hurricane High School cheerleaders brought home several awards form UCA summer camp at the University of Utah. | | By Samantha Jeppson
The Hurricane High School cheerleaders have worked hard since tryouts, in March 2007, to raise school spirit, get ready for summer camp and get ready for the 2007-2008 school year. There are 27 cheerleaders on the squad and only 9 of them have previous cheer experience. They are led by head coach Gonnie Buell, stunting coach Amber Buell, dancing coach Tia Ahquin and head cheerleader Samantha Jeppson. The cheerleaders attended a UCA summer camp at the University of Utah where they received first place on the routine they brought to camp, two second place trophies, a spirit stick, and the top banana award. The other schools at camp voted to give HHS cheerleaders the camp leadership award. The Cheerleaders have had 6:30 a.m. practices since day one and now that school has started they have games to cheer at during the week. On weekends they participate in service projects and fund raising. The girls stay very busy but would not want it any other way. This year’s squad is a great one, everyone is united and very good friends. They all love cheering! The cheerleaders are putting on a mini-cheer clinic and would like to invite all young people from the ages of 3 to 12 years old. The first practice will be Saturday, September 22 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and a second practice on Wednesday, September 26 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. These practices will be held in the Hurricane High School Gym. The cost is $30 and the child will receive a T-shirt, pom-poms, mini football, and cheek cheer. The mini-cheerleaders will be performing at the next home football game on September 28. The cheerleaders would like to thank everyone that has helped them cheer at games. They would also like to thank their parents for their help and support. They also would like to thank their coaches Gonnie, Amber, and Tia for everything they do.
