CEDAR CITY - It was, Hurricane's Karl Wilcock said, the tightest race possible.

"That's as close as you can get to a photo finish in cross country," Wilcock said after he edged Timpview's Jon Nelson to win the Cedar Invitational on Friday. Both men ran the three-mile course around the Cedar High campus in 14 minutes, 55 seconds.

Wilcock trailed Nelson by as many as five yards, but caught him just ahead of the tape.

"I had to give it everything to pass him," Wilcock said. "I was close to him our last race. I knew I had the best kick at the end. I was figuring on that."

Snow Canyon's Hayden Hawks was third in 15:15 with Josh Shrewbury of Kearns fourth (15:32) and Nate Fletcher of Timpview fifth (15:35).

The second five included Raphael Denovas of Timpview. Corey Kimzey of Pine View, Tanner Smedley of Kearns, Kyle Winward of Canyon View and Gary Hatch of Springville.

Timpview won the team trophy with 64 points. Pine View was second with 93 and Canyon View was third with 114. Springville had 137, Cedar City 155, Hurricane 199, Pleasant Grove 207, Spanish Fork 213, Kearns 223, West Jordan 242, Salem Hills 251, Desert Hills 368, Snow Canyon 379, Wasatch 421 and Dixie 440.

In the girls' race Aubrey Bryson won to pace all five Cedar girls to top 15 finishes. The Lady Reds won with 39 points to 85 for Salem Hills, 95 for Pleasant Grove, 147 for Timpview and 158 for Springville.

The rest of the team scoring included Spanish Fork at 188, Snow Canyon at 216, Canyon View at 217, Desert Hills at 274, Payson at 280, Dixie at 284, Pine View at 294 and Hurricane at 314.

"I wanted to break the school record of 18:05," Bryson said of her run. "I worked toward that goal."

She finished in 18:26 with Timpview's Hillary Trounther second at 18:43. Cedar's Ashley Grey was third (19:10) with Pine View's Ashley Judd fourth (19:11) and Pleasant Grove's Tabitha Borland fifth (19:12).

The second five included Cosette Stone of Salem Hills, Anna Willis of West Jordan, Hannah Grover of Cedar City, Jessica Hoffman of Salem Hills and Julie Mazeika of Pleasant Grove.

"I ran my PR (personal record)," Bryson noted. "We all did. We all had a good race. We had good team unity."

Cedar's Jenna Miller was 13th with Brakel Yardley 14th to create such a low score in the meet.

The Region 9 teams will be at Snow Canyon for a pre-region meet on Wednesday. The 4A teams will be at Dixie and the 3A teams at Cedar for the region championships on Oct. 15.
