TOOELE - Chris Homer despises bye weeks. That's why he shuttled his team all the way to Tooele to play a football game that hardly seemed in doubt beforehand, and also finished that way. And talk about routine - Homer's undefeated Hurricane team stayed that way with a 48-14 win. Tooele (1-5) scored first, but was otherwise hardly a threat in keeping the hungry visitors from improving to 7-0 with a big game against Desert Hills on the horizon. "I just didn't want our team to sit around," Homer said. "Whenever there's a week you can keep playing, you want to keep playing. I didn't want us to get sluggish, and I was pleased at how we handle the bus ride and played hard. It's good to see our kids have solid games and these kinds of trips bring out a cohesive quality, where you're really together and bonding." Jarom Healey had two scores and Trann Smith added three for Hurricane. "Everyone played solid," Homer said. "But I think you also give extra credit to our offensive line and defensive lines. We were able to make a lot of plays because of them." Hurricane players don't get into the discussion much - at least Homer doesn't want it - but it's no tight-lipped secret that this program wants to make the long drive north again for the state semifinals next month. That's part of the inspiration for these trips, to get guys dreaming and thinking. "We're pretty open about that as coaches," Homer said. "But for the kids, you just want them to focus day-to-day on getting better." And the coach appreciates the camaraderie that comes along with such an adventure. It was Tooele's homecoming, and the bus trip made the group a little sluggish. After Tooele's option produced an early score (on a 27-yard run), Hurricane answered with the next six touchdowns. Healey roamed in from 22 and 5 yards, Smith from 3 then 4, and then 32 in the final period. It won't presumably come easier next week at home against Desert Hills, which improved to 5-1 with a 31-14 win against Snow Canyon. Hurricane lost that game a year ago 27-20. "It was their senior night, and they took it to us," Homer said. The coach would have plenty of time on the ride home to review film, either from last night's romp, or that defeat a year ago. "I don't know if there's revenge in the air," Homer said. "It doesn't necessarily have to be that way. But we need the win." |
