HURRICANE Ð The Hurricane Tigers had a simple philosophy this week: take care of business.
After tallying 460 rushing yards and six touchdowns in Thursday's 41-7 rout of Canyon View, the Tigers certainly accomplished their mission, clinching at least a share of the Region 9 title heading into the final week of the regular season.
"We're happy to get the win, but we're not done yet," said standout offensive lineman Dan Nielson. "As a team, we won't be satisfied with just a share of the title. We want to win the championship outright."
Friday's win marks Hurricane's (5-0 region, 9-0 overall) third consecutive region title. After defeating the Falcons and shaking hands in postgame, the Tigers circled at the 30-yard line to anxiously wait for word on the outcome of the Cedar-Desert Hills game.
Once HHS found out the Reds had miraculously rallied to win their game, plans still proceeded to bring out the region championship since they will have a piece of it one way or another. Yet there was a clear letdown upon the news as coaches and players wanted to celebrate the outright championship in front of their home faithful. Instead, the talk soon turned to next week's showdown at Cedar, which will settle the matter on the field.
"It's going to be fun," said Tigers coach Chris Homer, who was still drying off after getting a Gatorade bath from players. "We know them (Cedar who is 4-1 in region and 8-1 overall) pretty well, and they know us pretty well. It's going to come down to who wants it more and execution."
Homer added there is a lot at stake as the winner will get the No. 1 seed and two home playoff games.
Hurricane showcased their skills against struggling Canyon View (0-5, 0-8). Tigers running back Jarom Healey led the effort with 161 yards and five touchdowns, including a 33-yard run with 5:46 left in the third quarter. The spectacular inside handoff started going left toward Hurricane's sideline at the Canyon View 38.
The senior appeared to be gang tackled for about a nine-yard gain, but the veteran somehow managed to escape the would-be tacklers, cut back to midfield and had nothing but open field in front of him.
Neilson said the Tigers' rushing game is lethal because the offensive line's ability to be tough and physical up front in addition to their endless talent in the backfield - a trait he and his band of brothers hope to continue next week at Cedar.
Canyon View totaled 131 yards on offense. Kameron King passed for 42 yards on 7-of-19 passing, highlighted by his eight-yard quick strike to Devin Kwiatkowski across the middle just before halftime.
Hurricane's Taylor Parker started at quarterback for Adam Long, who is suffering from the flu this week.
