HURRICANE - One was probably going to be enough, given how well Hurricane was controlling the midfield against Ben Lomond. But the Tigers kept moving forward, scoring two more goals in their 3-0 victory over the Scots.
"It just gives you more confidence heading into the next game," midfielder Carly Stratton said. "It came down to one, and our defense played well. ... Yes, one could have saved us, and we could have gone onto the next round with one, but I'm very glad to get three."
Hurricane is set to host Wasatch on Saturday 1 p.m., in the second round of the 3A state playoffs.
While the attack's impact is measured by shots (26) and goals scored, the defense was airtight and scrupulous.
The Scots rarely generated a consistent attack and whenever they got to the attacking third, the Tigers' backline was there to clear the ball.
"They all stepped up and winning every ball before it bounced and it made a big difference for us," Hurricane coach Lacy Kennington said. Lorina Anderson scored the first goal of the game in the 25th minute after receiving a cross from the right side of the box. Ben Lomond's keeper Leanza Driscol tried to make a save, but the ball squirted away from her, and back to Anderson's feet.
Anderson took a few steps to her right and delivered a soft shot into the far post to put the Tigers up 1-nil
It was only fitting for Anderson to score the first goal as in the 18th minute, Anderson received a wonderfully crossed ball from Shantai Bowen.
Anderson stuck her foot out to try and score, her attempt went over the crossbar.
"I felt right after I missed that I had to get one to make up for this one," Anderson said. "I think I should have walked it in. It hit my shin. (Walking) it in would have been a better chance of me getting it in. It was a lot of pressure and really nervous."
Hurricane entered the half up by the goal, but nothing changed in the second half.
The Tigers' insurance goal came in the 52nd minute when Miranda Hirschi gently tapped the ball into the net off of a Carly Stratton throw in.
Then in the 65th minute, Bowen had a clear path to goal after receiving a pass from the midfield. Bowen made one move and scored the Tigers' third goal of the game.
"Our coach always taught us to go for the corner," Bowens aid. "That's where I was aiming for. I tried to get it there."
By building such a comfortable lead with plenty of time to spare, the Tigers got to rest key players for the final 10 minutes, while getting some experience for younger players.
"The main thing why I took them out was so we didn't have any accidents or injuries," Kennington said. "You can't take chances and with a 3-0 lead that's a good cushion."
Though the rest was welcomed, Bowen preferred to be on the field. "It's smart that coach takes us out," Bowen said. "But I just hate being on the sideline watching. I have to be in there."
