Hurricane High School’s Drama and Music Departments will produce the Broadway classic musical “Working” this November and December in the school Auditorium.
The play is based on the book by Studs Terkel. He interviewed American workers in occupations overlooked by the popular media: waitresses, construction workers, teachers, housewives, retirees, office-workers, migrant farm laborers, cashiers, cleaning women…in other words, most of the jobs most of us hold down. The words are theirs, ours…and they illuminate the frustrations, dreams, loves and pride wrapped up in America’s Great Blue Collar Population. The songs, by James Taylor, Stephen Schwarz, and a host of other pop/rock/R&B luminaries, resonate with excitement, heartbreak and raw, all-American energy.
The play was Schwarz’s follow-up to his Broadway smash hits “Godspell” and “Pippin.” It represented a break with traditional musical theater format, which tells stories punctuated by songs. This work celebrates the lives and traditions of working America through monologues both spoken and sung. The actors interact mostly with the audience, allowing their biographies to create more of a narrative tapestry than a single plot. The result is a fresh, unpredictable, organic interaction between cast and crowd: a spontaneous act of creation with each performance.
The production stars Trevor Cox, Aleasa Prisbrey, Brenna Forsyth, Jenna Worwood, Tashara Kosten, Sammi Willard, Chris Gubler, Cedric Osborn-Brown, Brian Hill, Adam Wilcock, Amber Robertson, Heather Harrison, Tammy Carter and Kirsten Wunderlich. Richard Hill directs, with the assistance of Lindsey Pledger, Tammy Carter and co-choreographer Angela Osborn-Brown. Krystal Ruhl directs technicians Nicole Aguiano and LuEllen Lang.
