SALT LAKE CITY - Most years teams from Southern Utah are among the best in the state in high school cross country. They even win a state championship or two.

On Wednesday the teams were again among the best, but only managed one championship. They did win three runners-up trophies.

The championship came in the Class 1A boys' race where Panguitch's Trac Norris outdueled Elijah Rono of Wasatch Academy. Norris ran the 3-mile course at Sugarhouse Park in 16 minutes, 3.3 seconds while Rono ran it in 16:08.6. Last year Rono beat Norris by three seconds over the same course.

"All I can say is Elijah is a good runner," Norris said after the race. "I was glad to have someone push me to a good time."

Norris said the key to his victory was hard work and dedication. "I put in a lot more miles this year although playing baseball too made it a little difficult."

Norris and the Bobcat baseball team finished second in the state tournament last week.

"It was a fun season," Norris said. "Now that it's over I'm glad that I put in those miles. After four years, it feels good."

Milford's Dalaki Livingston finished eighth in the race.

Piute won the team championship with 78 points. St. Joseph Catholic was second with 82. Panguitch finished seventh.

In the 1A girls' race Panguitch's Heather Orton led the Bobcats to a second-place finish as she finished eighth. Joining her in securing the runner-up trophy were Katie Rosser (15), Aubry Parkin (17), Jamie Cooper (23), Shelby Taylor (25), Karie Owens (27) and Katelyn Peterson (34). Milford's Andrea Mayer placed fifth.

Andrea Chavez won the race in 18:48.9 to pace St. Joseph to the team championship. The Jays had 24 points to the Bobcats' 72.

Cedar's girls and Parowan's boys claimed the other runner-up trophies.

Richfield edged Parowan 45-49 for the Class 2A honors.

Richfield's Josh Monson and Mike Barbre finished first and third, with Parowan's Tyler Robinson second. Monson's time was 16:18.4.

"We knew it would be really close with us, Richfield or Juab," said Parowan coach Mike Robinson. "We were just hoping we could get a couple of kids in closer. I guess that's the way it goes. The kids did well; they ran great."

Joining Robinson on that runners-up squad were Philip Hornberger (8), Ammon Blauer (12), Dillon Mount (14), Robbie Tripp (21), Logan Ruesch (41) and Andy Wheeler (52).

Nobody from southwestern Utah finished in the top 10 of the 2A girls' race. San Juan won the team title with 65 points with Millard scoring 67.

Park City dominated the Class 3A girls' race, winning four of the top 10 places behind Ogden's Sarah Callister, who ran the race in 18:06.2.

Park City finished with 34 points to 74 for Cedar. Aubrey Bryson led the Lady Reds with a fourth-place finish. Hannah Ellsworth was 10th. The rest of that runner-up squad included Ashley Gray (13), Brakel Yardley (22), Hannah Grover (25), Jenna Miller (36) and Shelby Crockett (60).

"They all had really great times. We had three girls under 20 minutes and on the state course," said Cedar coach Heather Wilson. "That's saying something."

In the Class 3A boys' race, Hurricane's Karl Wilcock led for about the first half of the race.

Then, he ran into trouble.

"Everything tightened up," Wilcock said. "I couldn't move. I sprinted as hard as I could on the track and was barely moving." The last 120 meters of the race is run on the Highland High School track. Wilcock finished seventh. Ogden's Jacob Barton won in 15:35.2 but Park City won the team title with 44 points. Ogden was second with Canyon View third and Hurricane fourth.

Neither Class 4A race went especially well for the Southern Utah teams. Pine View's Ashley Judd was the top girls' finisher with 24th. McKinzie Peterson of Dixie was 27th with teammate Shayla Wilkinson 32nd and Snow Canyon's Sarah Gunn 35th. Mountain Crest's Macinze O'Very won in 18:13.9 to spark the Mustangs to the team title. They finished with 44 to 56 for Mountain View.

In the Class 4A boys' race, Snow Canyon's Hayden Hawks finished seventh to pace the Southern Utah finishers. Pine View's Trevor Thompson was 16th with teammate Austin Smith 19th.

Timpview's Jonathan Nelson won the race in 15:17.4 and his Thunderbirds won the team title with 58 points. Mountain View had 123. Pine View and Orem both finished with 137 points but Orem took third with placement determined by the sixth-place runners' finishes.
