ST. GEORGE - Hurricane steamrolled Moapa Valley Friday night 42-7 in its last non-region football contest. Offensively, the Tigers are purring, especially the running game. Hurricane rolled up 266 yards on 39 rushes. Senior running back Jarom Healey gained 94 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns, and added a 90-yard kick off touchdown. Healey's running mate and fellow senior Robert Reeve rushed the ball only six times, but gained 81 yards - 45 of which came on a single run for a score. Healey and Reeve are enjoying what Tigers' offensive line work. "Our offensive line is amazing," Healey said. "We have depth everywhere. It is a great experience running behind them. They had great push in this game." The Tigers jumped out to a 7-0 lead about six minutes into the first quarter off a 2-yard burst by Reeve. The Pirates answered the Tigers score with a Casen Lewis 6-yard touchdown pass to Kelan Weiss to knot the score at 7-7 at the 2:29 mark of the first quarter. That would be it for the Pirates. Healey took the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to put Hurricane back up 14-7, and the game only become more lopsided. The Tigers scored two touchdowns in the second quarter and two more in the third, all unanswered. All of the offense came on the ground for the Tigers. Quarterback Adam Long only threw seven times, completing six of his pass attempts. His six completions netted 115 yards and one touchdown, a 25-yard touchdown strike to senior running back Trann Smith. Healey said the team had discussions during the week about not letting down from last week's unsatisfactory performance - a 20-8 win against Delta. "We talked about not coming out flat like we did last week," Healey said. Hurricane did have its difficulties though, something head coach Chris Homer said needs to be fixed for Region 9 play. The Tigers committed 13 penalties for 115 yards. "We have to clean it up," Homer said. "We have committed a lot of penalties in all three games we have played. We are doing things that we should not be doing. I feel that we have disciplined kids, we are just not being smart at times. It is something we have to address." The Tigers defense only allowed 60 rushing yards on 32 attempts by the Pirates and 137 yards in passing. Defense is exactly what the Tigers will be in need of for next week's match-up against Dixie. The Tiger players are embracing the opportunity, and when asked about the potent Flyer offense, senior linebacker McCrae Vaifanua's answer was quick and unwavering. "We have a good defense," he said. |
