John Renshaw CEDAR CITY - To evaluate a program's success, all one needs do is look to their respective team's expectations heading into any given season. For Hurricane football, the mission is clear: Region 9 championships and successful campaigns during the state tournament.
With the region title and No. 1 seed for the upcoming 3A tourney already locked up, the Tigers didn't let down during Thursday night's regular season finale at Canyon View. After four unanswered first-half touchdowns, Hurricane cruised past the Falcons 45-7 to complete its perfect run against region foes this season.
"Regardless what level you play at, it's really tough to go through your region (or division) undefeated," said Tigers coach Chris Homer moments after getting the customary coach's Gatorade shower. "It's been a great season, but I don't think I can quantify it into words just yet."
Hurricane will host Wasatch in next week's 3A first-round matchup.
With the regular season officially wrapped up, Homer said the team will enjoy their success this weekend, but will certainly get back to work next week to prepare for the state tournament.
On the field, Hurricane (6-0 region, 9-0 overall) took care of business early and often against Canyon View (0-6, 2-7).
Hurricane co-captain and running back Brian Scott (40 yards on just six carries) tallied three touchdowns in the first half alone with runs of 4, 13 and 1 yard.
"Brian's a great leader on the field," said starting quarterback Taylor Parker, who left in the first half after a minor ankle injury. "He (Scott) leads by example. ... I believe he does just as good in the second half as he does in the first due to conditioning and (overall) strength."
In limited action, Parker went 2-of-2 passing for 86 yards. Homer said if Thursday was a playoff game, the senior would've been able to go back in and finish. Since it wasn't, Parker was replaced by Zach Prince (105 yards on 2-of-3 passing) as a precaution.
Tigers running back Adam Thompson also had a strong outing, rushing for a game-high 112 yards with one touchdown. His 87-yard scamper with 11:20 left in the third opened the second half with a bang to put the exclamation point on his team's win.
For Canyon View, sophomore quarterback Koy Huxford threw for 97 yards on 9-of-21 passing with one touchdown and one interception. Teammate Stetson Deardon led the Falcons with 89 yards on the ground.
Hurricane held a 411-113 advantage in total yards over Canyon View. Nathaniel Hansen led the Falcons with eight tackles in the losing effort.
The Tigers' trio of Jared Edwards, Kellen Seely and Kevin Mortenson combined for 17 tackles and one assist.
