ST. GEORGE - At long last, Hurricane's soccer team finally has what it takes to compete against the best. On Friday the Tigers charged into Snow Canyon and came away with a spectacular - and emotional - 2-1 overtime victory. Koy Gubler netted the final goal with just two minutes remaining, after which his team exuberantly stormed the field. "I just thought I'd drop it in," Gubler laughed. "It was pretty easy." The game was tied 1-1 after Snow Canyon's Kayden Barber put one past goalie Ryan Brubaker with 13:40 remaining in the first half. Hurricane picked up their defensive intensity, aptly batting away numerous Warriors (4-2-1, 5-5-1) attempts. With six minutes remaining in the second period Dillon Hurt had a good look, but popped the ball off the top of goal post. Moments later the pesky Warrior effortlessly squeezed by defenders, but couldn't finish. "My boys are tired, but they gave it all they got," said Hurricane coach Benji Nelson, who took over for Danny Cox two weeks before the start of the season. "Win or lose they played hard until the end." After a tough week in which they faced off against (and beat) Canyon View and (tied) top-ranked Desert Hills, Hurricane (6-3-1, 8-3-1) refused to quit, not even after Jesse Katzenbach missed a chance to win the contest with five minutes remaining. With 2:06 left on the clock, Landon Fisher kicked the ball to Toby Anderson who dished it off to Gubler for the win. "We just wanted to try and show some heart out there," Fisher beamed. "The past couple of years we've had some rough seasons, and we just wanted to show everybody that we're ready to play this year. We're not gonna give up."Nelson took his optimism even farther. "They're playing hard this year. We're starting to believe in ourselves - we're on our way to state. We want a championship." |
