ST. GEORGE - As the clock slowly ticked down and the end of nearly 100 minutes of thrilling soccer drew to a close, Hurricane defender Landon Fisher knew he had to try to make something happen He took a peek upfield, put a charge into the ball and hoped it would create a scoring opportunity. Little did he know his right-footed, 65-yard strike would be the game ender. Fisher's unexpected goal with 4:25 left in the second overtime allowed the Tigers to seize a dramatic 3-2 victory at Dixie State's Hansen Stadium on Tuesday night. It was Hurricane's fifth win in the span of six games - the other match ended in a tie against region-leading Desert Hills. "I was just trying to play it dangerous, hoping someone would get it," Fisher said. "I got a good bounce, the keeper came out and it bounced over (him). It was a lucky goal. I feel like we deserve it." White-knuckle finishes are becoming old hat for Hurricane. Long a doormat in Region 9, the Tigers (7-3-1 region, 9-3-1 overall) are enjoying a breakthrough season - and doing it in heart-stopping fashion. Each of Hurricane's past three games have gone double overtime, including a draw with Desert Hills and a 2-1 triumph in the 98th minute Friday vs. Snow Canyon. "This year they are believing in themselves, working really hard," said Tigers coach Benji Nelson. For the Panthers, however, the ball hasn't bounced their way much. Pine View (2-6, 4-8) has been a hard-luck team this season. Four of its last five losses have come by one goal. Against Hurricane, the Panthers - thanks to scores by Josh Harris and Brendon Lamoreaux - had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 only to have the Tigers level the contest in short order. And by short order, try 17 seconds. That's how long it took for Hurricane to knot it up at 2 in the second half. On the kickoff following Lamoreaux's tally in the 52nd minute, Hurricane charged up the pitch. Inside the right-hand side of the 18-yard box, Joey Muscolino crossed the ball to Colton Barney, who ripped it into the net. "We literally fell asleep and it ended up burning us," said PV coach Sam Johnston. "Credit to Hurricane, they came right back at us. They didn't let any deficit get to them." Said Fisher: "We were a little bit annoyed. After someone scores a goal, the next five minutes we try to push really hard because we don't want the momentum to shift back their way." Both teams had opportunities in the ensuing 38 minutes as the length of the contest began to take its toll on the players' fitness. Scoring opportunities were repeatedly turned away by goalkeepers Ryan Brubaker of Hurricane and Pine View's Logan Kimzey. But all that changed in a heartbeat, thanks to a rip by Fisher and a miscalculation by an otherwise splendid keeper. "He just punched it hoping someone was going to get it," Nelson said of Fisher. "It took a great bounce and went over the goalkeeper's head. It was just one of those lucky moments." While Hurricane has locked up second place among 3A Region 9 teams and a home game in the first round of the state tournament, Pine View will not reach the postseason. The Panthers had already been eliminated before Tuesday's tilt, yet a win would have gone a long way to buoy their confidence. "It's just a microcosm of our season," Johnston said. "We've lost by penalty kicks in the last minute, we've lost by missing a penalty kick. Just when you think we can't find another way to lose, we find another way to lose. It feels like the soccer gods are against us right now."
