| After reaching the second round of the Class 3A soccer tournament last year, Hurricane coach Doug Katzenbach is looking for bigger and better things this season.
“We should have a good season,” said Katzenbach as he prepared to start workouts in early March. “We have a very strong starting group and we have kids with a strong desire so we’ll see where that takes us.”
The Tigers have seven seniors and two juniors from last year’s team, which beat North Sanpete 2-1 and lost to Uintah 2-1 in the state tournament.
Included in that group are three-year starter Shad Johnson in goal and leading scorer David Stirland at forward. Stirland scored a dozen goals a year ago.
Other returning players are midfielders Chase Stratton, Ryan Chandler and Pahoran Puga and defenders Garrett Porter, Scott Garrett, Adam Wilcock and Julan Harris. Chandler and Puga are juniors while the others are all seniors.
In addition, the Tigers have freshmen Jesse Katzenbach and midfielder Landon Fisher among those who should contribute.
“Our goal is to compete for the region championship,” coach Katzenbach said. “This region is always strong. Cedar always gives us a run and Canyon View is getting better. Desert Hills is young but they have good players.”
The Class 3A teams in Region Nine will play one another three times while playing Pine View, Dixie and Snow Canyon just once. Only the games against Cedar, Canyon View and Desert Hills will count toward qualifying for the state tournament. That tournament will start at the higher-seeded home schools on May 2. The finals will be May 8 and 9 with the site to be announced by the Utah High School Activities Association.
Competition begins in early March when the Tigers travel to Beaver. Their other preseason games will be against North Sanpete, Uintah and Delta. The first league game will be March 19.
