| PROVO - Three was Hurricane's magic track number Saturday. For the team, it meant going after a third consecutive boys team title. For senior Jordan Prince, it meant taking his most difficult event and making the most of it. A third-place finish in the 800-meter run near the end of a rare, warm day on the BYU campus had the Tigers on the prowl again. "We had an idea of how many points we could get," said head coach Boyd Prince, Jordan's father. "And we really eclipsed that. We just competed so well this weekend. You're supposed to gear up to have your best times and distances at the state meet, and that's exactly what these kids did." Prince finished second in the 1,600 on Friday and also runner-up in the 3,200 to start the final day of competition. Teammate Brian Scott, a junior, threw the discuss a little over 144 feet to garner a Tigers win in what was otherwise an earnest showcase of depth and, as the younger Prince put it, "heart." "We weren't satisfied at all," he said. "We all wanted to do our best. We came in with that mindset, and everyone did it." Hurricane had 89.5 points, about 10 more than the coaching staff figured. Canyon View was second at 78. Canyon View was represented well by Matt Wright, a cross country whiz who won the 3,200 in 9:32.33 - about five seconds faster than Prince. |
