Sisters Share Track Coaching Duties | | The Hurricane High track team is expecting to do well against the other Region 9 3A teams this season. | | From the Hurricane Valley Journal By: Michael Rinker Have you heard of the popular television sitcom, “Two and a Half Men?” Well, the Hurricane High girls track team has something similar; it’s called “Two and a Half Sisters.” Actually it’s three sisters – Keturah Lance, Stannah Wood and Tasha Burton – but Lance, who is in charge of the runners, and Wood, who oversees the throwers, are co-head coaches while Burton, the youngest, is an assistant coach. The sisters, who have coached track for several years, replace last year’s head coach Crissy Morris. The squad had its first practice/tryouts, Feb. 25, in anticipation of the big, season-opening Hurricane Invitational Friday and Saturday, March 7 and 8. “There were a lot of girls who came out,” Wood said. “It’s the most I’ve seen in a lot of years.” Several members of the basketball team are participating on the track team, but because they went deep into the state playoffs, they didn’t get the usual amount of time to rest between seasons. Although the various disciplines practice separately, the team begins each practice together, running a warm-up lap, stretching and doing drills. Wood said she expects this year’s squad to improve over last year’s. Although some girls placed in the state last year, the team was very young and not as good as they hoped to be, but Wood said it was “exciting because you know you’re going to get better.” She is confident in her throwers (discus, javelin, shot put), and believes the entire team will do well against regional opponents, although she said Cedar High distance runners (mile, two-mile) are traditionally very good. The Tigers are matched with Region 9 3A foes Cedar and Canyon View. In track, the girls must qualify and compete individually for the post-season – except the relay squads – but their points are added together for a team score.
