| HURRICANE - It may have seemed like Dixie had the advantage coming into this one. The Flyers were well-rested; Hurricane played Pine View the night before. Yet never underestimate the motivating power of a bad performance. The Tigers had Wednesday's debacle to atone for. After a disappointing loss to Pine View, Hurricane's boys basketball team bounced back with a dominating 60-38 victory over visiting Dixie on Thursday. "People were all worried about playing back to back, but these guys want to play and get that bad taste out of their mouth," said Tigers coach Gordon Dotson. "They didn't want it hanging around." Hurricane took a 17-5 first-quarter advantage and never led by fewer than seven points the rest of the way. The Tigers (1-1 Region 9, 9-2 overall) had three players in double-digit scoring, led by Zach Sorenson's 15 points. Sorenson and Jaden Seely (13 points) got Hurricane out to a blistering start with a combined three 3-pointers in the opening frame. But don't confuse those early treys for a wide open Tigers' attack. No forced shots here. Screens and ball movement made for open looks. "We talked about working the ball around more than last night," Seely said. "Today we made the extra pass, more touches on the block." Mike Sharp led the Flyers (0-1, 3-6) with 12 points, and had an old-fashioned three-point play at the halftime buzzer to pull Dixie to within seven at 29-22. However, Hurricane started the second half on a 13-3 run, burying the disjointed Flyers. Tyler Hinton was consistent in the post for the Tigers, accumulating 12 points while moving well without the ball. "If we're patient on offense, moving the ball, trying to get reversals. ... when we do that, we're tough," Dotson said. "We can hit shots." The good news for Dixie: It won't have long to dwell on this one. The Flyers are back in action today at 7 p.m., hosting Desert Hills. Hurricane won't play again until Wednesday vs. Canyon View. |
