The Tigers wanted to be physical and build a big lead to crush any thought of a possible Falcons upset.
After the final buzzer rang, the Tigers can refer to its easy 57-29 win as mission accomplished.
"We knew we couldn't have a letdown because this is another region game," said forward Tyler Hinton who finished with 11 points and four rebounds. "We executed our defensive plan in the first half and built a good-sized lead."
The Tigers (2-1 region, 10-2 overall) are still reeling from their defeat to region rival Pine View earlier this month. Numbers wise, the Panthers are a team Hurricane should beat. After Wednesday's win, they have rebounded nicely with two straight wins.
"After the Pine View debacle, we've righted the ship," coach Gordon Dotson said. "We've gotten back to what we do best, which is play great defense and go inside to outside on offense."
Ahead 11-5 after the first quarter, Hurricane went on a 28-13 run in the second.
Guards Zach Sorenson and Rich Anderson led a more than successful transition attack down court, feeding the Tigers' big men the rock in the paint for easy layups.
Canyon View's top scorers, Logan Staheli and Jordan Sanders, were limited to a combined nine points for the game. As a team, the Falcons looked overmatched to the Tigers' physical and scrappy play.
However, Canyon View made one brief attempt at getting back into the ballgame.
The Falcons cut the 30-16 halftime deficit to 30-20 after the first few minutes of the third. But Hinton's groove disrupted that as he converted six points from the post in a short span to bump up Hurricane's lead to 37-22. From there, Canyon View never threatened to cut the deficit to double digits again.
"This team has a lot of leadership on it," Hinton said. "And we've all been playing together since seventh grade. There's great team unity here. É On the court, we know each other so well. Our communication is a big part of our success."
The Falcons appear to be in the midst of another tough stretch. The loss puts their current skid at three and the road ahead doesn't get any easier with games at Desert Hills and Dixie within the next week and a half.
Hurricane, on the other hand, will have one more pit stop - at Cedar on Friday - before next week's showdown with first-place Desert Hills.
