ST. GEORGE - As the Hurricane Tigers struggled to keep pace with the Desert Hills Thunder, senior Megan Clyde was more than happy to be a decoy, with two and sometimes three Thunder defenders often draped on her like a twisted curtain. When winning time came, Clyde tore the defensive curtain away and the Tigers turned it into an important victory. The senior scored 15 points, including the winning basket with less than two seconds remaining, as Hurricane stunned Desert Hills with a 44-43 overtime win on Tuesday on the Thunder's home floor. While Clyde hit the points that mattered, Hurricane (6-7, 1-0 3A Region 9) got a huge 3-pointer from sophomore Taylor Steglich with 13.6 seconds left that closed Desert Hills' lead to 43-42. Steglich led all scorers with 21 points, including six baskets from long distance. "The whole team had to pick up the intensity on defense. Once we did, the offense fell into place," Steglich said. Needing only to hold onto the ball, the Thunder (5-8, 0-1) turned it over on a jump ball when Jenna Miller got tied up near mid-court with 8.8 seconds remaining, giving Clyde and the Tigers a shot at the win. After taking the inbounds pass from Steglich, Clyde worked her way around a Desert Hills defender and hit a short jumper in the lane that bounced through for the winner. "It's good to have an intense, close game. We know how to handle them, and they're a lot of fun," Clyde said. "I love how good our young players have done. They've stepped up a lot and given everything they can to play their hardest." The Tigers won their second straight overtime game and have won three of the last four - all by a combined eight points. In the overtime period, Keilani Needham scored two quick baskets for the Thunder in the first minute, but they wouldn't score again. Needham led Desert Hills with 14 points. "There wasn't one specific thing that cost us, but what happened in the end is what we remember," Thunder coach Chris Allred said. "This game was ours to win, but we've got to learn that we can't play with a fear of losing. "They did what I asked of them (on the final play) - get the ball in and secure it. We got it in, but we didn't secure it enough." Hurricane trailed for most of the game, but never fell behind by more than nine points. Steglich hit two of her 3-pointers on consecutive possessions early in the fourth quarter to give the Tigers a 32-30 lead. Steglich hit three free throws with 1:31 left in regulation that tied the score at 39. Neither side scored down the stretch, although the Thunder missed two shots in the closing seconds. KANAB 50, MILLARD 49: The Cowgirls got 20 points from Kelly Livingston, but had to hold on in the fourth quarter for the win over the Eagles. Calli Jackson pulled down 10 rebounds as Kanab stayed perfect in Region 13 play at 3-0 (9-4 overall). ENTERPRISE 65, CROSS CREEK 12: Tessa Lyman poured in 18 points and Megan Clove added 13 as the Wolves cruised over the Bobcats to improve to 2-1 in Region 13 (7-7 overall). |
