Canyon View used Cassidy Holmes’ fast start and Kassidy Carter’s strong finish to down Hurricane 52-43 in Region 9 girls’ basketball play Thursday night. Holmes scored 13 of her 20 points in the first quarter as the Falcons took an 18-6 lead. Carter had 11 of her 15 points in the second half to help Canyon View hold the Tigers off. “Canyon View, when they hit shots, they’re tough,” said Hurricane coach Clair Woodbury. “And they were hitting shots, and our defensive rotation wasn’t quite there.” With the victory the Falcons pulled even with the Tigers in the Region 9 race with three games left in the regular season. Both teams are 4-2 in league play. “We need to win out,” Woodbury said. “Win our next three and we’ll be region champions. These girls can do it. They’re a good team.” Hurricane showed its capability in the second quarter. After falling way behind, the Tigers used a 16-4 run to close within 22-20 with three minutes left. But the Falcons eased away and led 28-23 at half-time. Neither team made any progress in the third quarter, which ended with Canyon View ahead 38-33. In the fourth quarter, Canyon View got off to an 8-1 start and Hurricane was never able to recover. The Falcons turned three offensive rebounds into points during that burst. “The other difference was they were much better on the boards than we were,” Woodbury said. “We’ll address that.” Although the Falcons shadowed Megan Clyde all night, she finished with 18 points. But her inability to connect on a down-the-barrel 3-point basket when the game was still winnable in the fourth quarter was a microcosm of the entire night. Hurricane regularly had shots spin deep into the net, only to spin out again and into a Canyon View rebounder’s hands. Sadi Hoyt and Angela Shields each had seven points for the Tigers. Siai Keil had six while Taylor Steglich and Carly Stratton finished with five apiece. |
