| CEDAR CITY - Megan Clyde admitted she doesn't like long road trips. Advertisement
So she did everything she could do to avoid a six-hour ride up to Morgan with a 23-point performance in Hurricane's 52-47 win over Cedar Wednesday.
The win secured second place for the Tigers in Region 9.
"That's exciting, since I hate bus rides," Clyde said. "So the team and I are grateful that we avoided a trip to Morgan."
It also snapped a three-game losing skid for the Tigers, which included a loss to Cedar on Feb. 10.
"I don't know what happened on that skid," Hurricane coach Clair Woodbury said. "We didn't play that bad, but I think the other teams played much better against us."
The Tigers (10-11, 5-4 3A Region 9) will host Bear River on Saturday, while the Lady Reds (13-8, 5-4) will travel north to take on Morgan.
"Anytime you can get a home game, on these play-in games, it's huge," Woodbury said. "That bus ride can take some of your legs away."
Cedar coach John Elison added, "It's disappointing. ... It's always hard to play at Morgan, and beat them on their home floor. We have to execute things just right if we want to beat them."
Clyde wasn't the only Tiger scoring points.
The other six players who saw action each chipped in at least two points. Brittany Ward was the second leading scorer, adding seven points.
"Megan can only get so many," Woodbury said. "Everyone scored points and that's huge. We tell our girls, '(Megan's) going to get her 20, but we need 30 out of the rest of you.'" (2 of 2)
Jazzy Barney scored a team-high 14 points for Cedar, including three 3-pointers. Advertisement
Barney's treys helped the Lady Reds take their first and only lead with 5:44 in the second quarter, following a 9-0 run.
The performance was a relief for Elison because Barney had fought the flu earlier in the week.
"I was a little worried about her because the last two days she wasn't able to practice," he said. "I didn't know what we would get tonight, but I was proud of her because she did some big things for us in a big game."
Hurricane came back to reclaim the lead later in the period, and never looked back.
The Tigers started a small run capped off when Clyde hit back-to-back treys to put them up by 10.
"I've been struggling a lot with hitting 3-pointers lately, so it was exciting," Clyde said. "It boosted my confidence up a lot."
The Lady Reds made small spurts from time to time, but they couldn't get over the hump after rallying back time after time.
"The biggest reason why we couldn't get over the hump was that they were scoring well," Elison said. "I have to give them credit on that. Our defense didn't do what we wanted them to do, but Hurricane was smart early and they got us."
