CEDAR CITY - As far as opening night performances go, the Cedar Redmen were happy with the good things they did on the wrestling mat. For its first Region 9 dual of the new season, the game was all about improvement.

Scoring five pins and a technical fall, the Redmen were able to hold off the Hurricane Tigers for a 41-33 victory Thursday night at the Cedar gym.

"This dual let us know where we're at," said Cedar head coach John Dodds. "When we wrestle, we're not focused on winning or losing, but on improvement."

For its opening matches in the lower weights, Cedar's results were mixed. At 103 pounds, Cole Corral was pinned by the Tigers' Lin Manwaring at the 3 minute, 41 second mark, but Dallas Gale defeated Jordan Prince at 112 pounds by a 9-2 count.

From that point forward, the Redmen took full control, posting a total of seven victories.

After Cody Hone, last year's state runner-up in 3A at 112 pounds, pinned Hurricane's Jace Jackson in 50 seconds in the 119-pound match to put Cedar in the lead on the overall scoreboard, senior Thomas Carter followed with a 17-0 technical fall over Jake Bergquist.

"I was a little out of shape and nervous wrestling at home in front of the school," said Carter, who suffered a separated shoulder at practice on Dec. 1. "We're a young team and everyone's working hard, so that's a positive."

Oliver Riddle was another of the Cedar wrestlers who scored a pin on Thursday, getting Hurricane's Neil O'Brien on his back in 1:08.

"The biggest positive was I had constant pressure, always on the offensive," Riddle said of his win.

Among the other winners for Cedar were Carsen Ludlow (135), Larsan Cottam (140), Jared Stratton (160) and Kevin King (189). Cottam, Stratton and King all scored pins, while Ludlow won in a 7-5 decision over Jeremy Evans.

The Tigers got wins from Justin Post (125 by decision), and pins from Alex Johnson (145), Brian Scott (171), Riley Pentico (215) and Danan Wood (285).

"We're just a young team and we've got to keep getting better," Hurricane coach Mike Randall said.

For Dodds and the Redmen, Thursday's dual is the start of the improvement plan for the state meet.

"We're always trying to improve. It's not February yet, and that's where we want to peak," he said.
