CEDAR CITY - Avoiding getting pinned is just as important as earning one.

Canyon View and Hurricane each won seven matches, but the Falcons prevailed, scoring six consecutive pins in a 42-34 victory Thursday over the Tigers.

"We won the meet because of the younger wrestlers who didn't get pinned," Canyon View coach Dallas Lowry said. "Our younger kids fought and that's what won us the match."

The Tigers took the first four matches, but at 103 and 112, Canyon View's Braxton Duncan and Travis Robinson avoided getting their shoulders pinned to the mat, paving the way for the heart of the Falcons' lineup.

Lowry was visibly confident after Duncan and Robinson's matches, and continued to send the message to his team that the younger, lighter weights weren't getting pinned and fighting every second of the match.

"When they didn't pin Duncan and Robinson, I knew we were going to win," Lowry said. "We are tough in our middleweights and the seniors did great."

The middle weights secured six pins, with four of them coming in the first round. Five of the six victories came from seniors, who were wrestling in their final home dual meet of the season.

Stenson Bergstrom earned the fastest fall, ending his match in a mere 17 seconds.

"The faster, the better," he said. "All the kids in the middleweights have been wrestling a long time and are dedicated. ... The seniors are calm, and we go out, wrestle and win."

While Canyon View was the most experienced in the middle, it was where the Tigers were the least experienced.

Hurricane won three of its last four matches, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.

"The middle weights is where we're bad and the middle weights is where they're good," Hurricane coach Mike Randall said. "We have a young team. We only started two seniors and one junior."

Randall said having the experience made the difference as to why the Falcons were able to secure victories by pin, while his team was able to get wins by decision.

"Experience makes a difference," he said.

The Falcon seniors went 6-1 in the match.

Tyler Davis defeated Jeremy Evans in 44 seconds. Dakota Hagenno won his bout with 24.6 seconds remaining in his match.

Remington and Bateman won their bouts in the second period over Eric Leone and Chad Bourne respectively.

Hakan Swenson was the only senior to fall, losing 11-1 to Dannon Wood at 215 pounds.

AJ Cozzens didn't get to wrestle in front of his home crowd one last time, because Hurricane's 189 grappler was out with an injury.

"It's fine not wrestling," he said. "I definitely prefer the team win."

Both teams are set to travel for their next tournaments, before heading into the region tournament.

Hurricane will visit Enterprise, while Canyon View will be at North Sanpete.

NOTES: After the first period of the Brad Nixon-Jace Jackson match at 119 pounds, the referee ran over to the scorer's table and said, "This is a good match." Nixon and Jackson were tied at 7-7 after the first period, and Nixon took the lead in the second following a late takedown with a little less than a minute remaining. Jackson came back, and secured a pin to give Hurricane its first win of the night.
