Delta dominates Super Region South meet PDF Print
DRAPER — It was not surprising that Delta won the Super Region South -Tournament at Juan Diego that combined Region 8 and the 3A schools from Region 9, but what was rather shocking was the utterly dominating fashion in which it captured the title.

The Rabbits won 11 of the 14 individual titles and they broke their own previous record set just last year for team points as they scored an incredible 484. Canyon View was a distant second with 217 and Cedar scored 209. Hurricane (183), Juan Diego (173) and North Sanpete (171) rounded out the top six.

"It was important for our guys to not only come in and win, but to dominate," said Rabbits coach Josh Wright. "We have been preparing for this week and next all season long, and I think we are wrestling our best of the season now, peaking at the right time."

Only one Delta wrestler lost in the finals, and that was because JV wrestler Christian Hatch lost to teammate and varsity wrestler Tyler Williams. Chasen Tolbert (112), Jace Abbott (125), Derek Peterson (130), Williams (135), Justin Penn (140), Brendan Willoughby (145), Jordan Sorensen (152), Zach Oppenheimer (160), Nick Petersen (171), Skyler Porter (189) and Spencer Nielson (215) all claimed region titles for Delta.

"You have to go out and represent when you wrestle for Delta," said Tolbert, a defending state champion and the favorite to claim another title at next week's state tournament. "We all push each other to be the best we possibly can be. We work hard everyday, and we help each other get better. It is a sense of pride."

"We wanted to make a statement, and I think we did," said Derek Peterson. "We knew we were a good team, and we felt it was important for us to come out and prove it to everyone else."

It was hard to take any spotlight away from what Delta accomplished, but a few grapplers managed to do so. Drew Mills of Hurricane (103 pounds), Cody Hone of Cedar (119) and Jamie Markosian of Juan Diego (285) were the lone non-Delta winners.

"One thing that is nice about wrestling is that even if your entire team can't compete, you can still go out and win an individual title," said Hone. "Our team did OK, but it is good to think I can win another region title and then have a good shot to go out and get a state title next week."

"Our team has come a long way," Markosian said. "But we still have a long way to go. It is nice to come back and get a region title. I wasn't able to wrestle last year because I had a cast on my hand the whole season, so to get back on the mats and prove to myself that I can do this is a great feeling. Now, I just need to go out and do it next week."

The 3A state tournament begins on Thursday at the McKay Events Center on the campus of Utah Valley University.

Delta qualified 23 wrestlers out of a max possible of 28 and is the overwhelming favorite to capture the school's 27th state title, but first since 1993.
